Biggles2000
What was it?
Biggles 2000 was, still is, and probably always will be the name of my current desktop PC. During my college years, all of my friends seemed to have nicknames for their computers. I, always one to succumb to computer-oriented peer pressure, decided to christen my own computer with a nickname that was easily recognizable by others. Additionally, I wanted to go that extra step: add a snappy slogan and pretend the name of my machine was indicative of an actual company. A millisecond of thought later and I arrived at "Biggles 2000: The Gateway to the Next Generation," a combination of my nickname, a parody of my college's PC distributor, and what was once my favorite sci-fi show.

Pretty wicked clever, eh?

Well, maybe not.

In any case, with the advent of the World Wide Web, Biggles 2000 became the title of my original, single-page, HTML home. A few months later, I scrapped that page in favor of a new design: the original Mind 'Scapes, which focused on my interest in science. However, as time passed, I wanted the web to reflect my other interests as well, so I reverted back to the more personal Biggles 2000 pages.

Like the current Mind 'Scapes, the new and improved Biggles 2000 web pages were separted into several areas, each with its own name and scheme. Mind 'Scapes was incorportated into its own division, accompanied by Mystic Realms, the Publisher's Desk, Digital Planes, the Entertainer's Stage, the Web Surfin' division, and a division about me. To show you the influence of the Biggles 2000 on these new pages, the icons of each are displayed below.

Despite rave reviews from fellow web smiths, I had several problems with the Biggles 2000. First and foremost, it was nothing more than a huge list of links that I rarely had time to update. And since the entire site was links, there was nothing truly "personal" about the site. Second, some of the artwork had been absconded from other sites and I was finally maturing to the point where I wanted all of the artwork to be my own. Third, the site was frame-based. I have nothing against frames, but for a long time, navigating through my frames depended on a browser's ability to interpret Javascript. Finally, Biggles 2000 was not a set of pages that I wanted to show off to professionals who might be interested in hiring me. They simply didn't demonstrate my artistic and layout abilities as well as they could. So, they were scrapped and Mind 'Scapes was reborn in its new form.

Besides, the name Biggles 2000 is awfully silly, but it's still fun to have around, thus Mind 'Scapes remains a subsidary of an even larger, imaginary, transdimensional company called the Biggles 2000 Time-Dimensional Corporation.

Mind 'Scapes, its pages and contents are © 1998 by Michael D. Hilborn, President of the Biggles 2000 Time-Dimensional Corporation. You are free to copy and use the original artwork on these pages, although I would appreciate it if you ask me first. Please note that the dragon's head in the "Mystic Realms" gate is from Larry Elmore's "The Golden General", and the globe and desktop of the old "Publisher's Desk" was taken from the web site of Lafayette College.
